Actions to Resolve Drug Shortages hero image

Actions to Resolve Drug Shortages

In the first quarter of 2024, The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) reported an estimated 323 active drug shortages, slightly exceeding the previous record of 320 shortages set in 2014. In light of this record setting year, there are several actions the federal government is taking to address drugs shortages including proposed legislation, regulatory action, and an investigation by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Several of the proposals involve the appointment of centralized federal leadership to oversee the drug supply chain. Specific legislation includes the PREPARE Act of 2024 which is a House bill to establish a strategic active pharmaceutical ingredients reserve plan and appointment of a director of this plan.
